Sustainability Statement

Our Environmental Initiatives

At Jiggers Jigsaws sustainability within our business practices, products, and operations is very important to us. We’re proud to have kept running as a small family business for over 45 years, and to have kept our production at a small, simple scale throughout this time.

Being a family-run business, sustainability has always been a core ethos in the way we manage things and we endeavour to make changes when and where we can to play our own little part in tackling climate change and ensuring the future of our beautiful planet for future generations.

Production

All our Name Puzzles and Word Makers are handmade in small batches in our little workshop in Worthing, on the UK south coast. In 2024 we installed solar panels so that our workshop is primarily powered by the sun!

We believe in the old maxim “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and because of this, many of our machines and equipment have been in service for many, many years – simply put: they do they job, and so in our minds there is no need to replace them. By doing this, we are keeping the majority of our workshop equipment out of landfill for as long as we possibly can.

Wood

All our puzzles are made from high-grade birch plywood from renewable sources – birch trees are incredibly fast growing trees, making this a very sustainable option. Meanwhile, the hardboard we use for the backing on our puzzles is made by collecting up sawmill waste, fibres and sawdust and steam compressing it, without any need for a glue or adhesive.

We have always been about minimum wastage when making our toys – making use of offcuts where we can, or donating them to other maker friends who can use them for their own products.

Varnish

We use a non-hazardous, water-based varnish manufactured in the UK on all of our products.

Packaging

We have purposefully kept to simple packaging for our products – each item is heat shrink-wrapped  - the film we use is made up of 30% recycled materials and is 100% recyclable as a ‘soft plastic’, meaning you can take it along with your crisp packets and other plastic bags and packaging and recycle at your nearest supermarket that offers this service.

We are currently looking at options to make the packaging we use for shipping our products more eco-friendly, without compromising the protection of your toys as they make their way to you.

Longevity

Our wooden toys are built to last, and we hear almost on a weekly basis from customers who still have their childhood puzzles, and are now buying for their own children – so you could say our toys can be loved for a lifetime!
